Royal Marines Return to BASE

September 7th 2021

When the Royal Marines were last in Bordon 10 years ago, they were on training courses for technical qualifications. Their Vehicle Mechanics and Armourers attended the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, in preparation for deployment to Commando Units serving all over the world.

Today, they have a renewed presence at the BASE Bordon Innovation Centre on Barbados Road.

Former Royal Marine Paul Deacon, and Duncan Gill, Manager of BASE Bordon, first met when just 5 years old and have remained good friends. When Duncan mentioned to Paul recently that the display of Armed Forces hats at BASE didn’t have a Royal Marines presence, they decided to resolve the issue.

Paul, now Chairman of the Royal Marines Association (RMA), has kindly donated his peaked cap to the collection, stating:

“I am very pleased to add a Royal Marines peak cap to the collection at BASE Bordon Innovation Centre. The Royal Marines were drafted to Bordon to carry out technical training courses for many years, so the Corps has a long affiliation with the area and its residents.  As part of the Royal Marines Charity, the RMA gives a lifetime of support to the Royal Marines family. We are the instinctive first place to which the Royal Marines community turn for support and camaraderie, and we will deliver through life support, serving the needs of our Corps Family.

Duncan stated: “We’ve proudly accepted this prestigious addition to our collection and are showing it off in our Business Lounge at BASE Bordon – the former Officers’ mess. All of the companies here appreciate the historical legacy and I’d be delighted to welcome anyone interested in viewing our regimental headgear, as well as our extensive facilities for growing businesses”.
